Find Adobe Reader Installer File
I have Win 10 home, 64 bit. I have spent weeks trying to install Adobe Reader (in any version). I tried XI and DC but always got a 'Newer version already installed' message or, occasionally a critical error after install. Googling a solution always turnsup a recommendation to use the Acrobat cleaner tool.
In most cases.msi switches '/quiet /passive /norestart' will do the trick. To help you take it further here is Adobe Reader XI 11.0.07 full, Switchless install - completely silent!! - no desktop icon - checked on win 7 (x64x86). The silent installer can be used in any Windows version that is.
This didn't work. I finally sorted it by creating a new folder and installing it in c:/Adobe. It will not install in 'Program Files (x86)' where it is supposed to go.
It was also inaccessible in itsfolder under Program Files (x86) from within Explorer telling me I was not an Administrator.So I have a solution to my immediate issue but would like to know what is the cause of this problem. I removed my successful installation in c:/Adobe using the Adobe installer package.2. I carried out a clean boot as per your advice.3. I reinstalled Adobe Reader XI in the default location, ie Program Files (x86).4. The install was successful but when I tried to run it I got 'Problem with shortcut - Fatal error during installation'.5. I removed it again and reinstalled it back in c:/Adobe and this works.I noticed that when I removed the package using the Adobe install program it complained I had insufficient privileges (but it still removed it).
I think this is something to do with privileges/permissions on the Program Files (x86) directory. The factthat I can install it elsewhere but not there would seem to point to that. Also, when I have installed it in Program Files (x86) (but it hasn't worked), I have not been able to enter Program Files (x86)AdobeReader. It required me to say I am administratorand then to make myself owner at lower directories to access them. Something not right there as I can access the whole of my new c:/Adobe file structure. I am the administrator on this PC btw.

On your command line, you can use msiexec and Adobe properties and switches.
Order of precedence from least to most controlling is as follows: Property table > Transform > command line. That is, command line run properties override any installer setting.
Installer table modification¶
While it is possible to use the Customization Wizard’s Direct Editor or 3rd party tool such as ORCA to modify the installer tables, Adobe strongly recommends that you do not do so unless you are knowledgeable about editing and troubleshooting installer tables. Improper use can result in the corruption of the installer.
Installer tables may vary by product type (Reader vs. Acrobat vs. Acrobat Standard, etc.) uses Reader. Inspect the tables of the product you are installing to determine if a default is provided.

setup.ini (use with .exe)¶
You can use your customized MST for bootstrapper deployments. The bootstrapper Setup.exe file uses setup.ini as its configuration file. As you customize the installer with the Wizard, the Setup.ini file automatically updates. The Setup.exe file uses Setup.ini as it’s configuration file. Before deployment, open Setup.ini, verify it contains all the properties you need, and edit it as neccessary.
Setup.ini contains two sections:
[Startup]: Setup.exe first executes the Adobe flags for
CmdLine. Do not place Adobe properties or MSI switches here; for example, you can use/sAllbut not/qb!+in this section.[Product] Setup.exe then reads the [Product] section. There may be multiple [Product] sections depending what the EXE should invoke (other MSI’s or EXE’s). The
CmdLineshould only contain values supported by the item the EXE invokes. For example, when invoking an MSI (msi=AcroPro.msi), you can only use space-separated Adobe properties (flag/value pairs connected by an = sign) and MSI switches; for example, you can use/qb!+but not/sAllin this section.
